Many remember him as “Mr. Ron” from the beloved 1990s children's television show “Gullah Gullah Island,” which introduced countless viewers to South Carolina’s Gullah culture. But beyond the screen, Daise has continued to educate and preserve Gullah traditions through baking.

To Gordon, the 520 experience starts before that first crispy bite. It begins with the smell when you walk through the doors, he says. There’s earthy, neo soul music playing, and work from local artists on the walls. Tattoo artist Coco created the mural at the Waters Avenue location. “That just all adds to the overall [experience],” Gordon says.

I too tend not to stray away from the comforted mall meals from Panda Express and PF Chang’s and branch into the unknown. Many restaurants local to the area are hoping that its customers would find the courage to become curious about authentic cuisines. Luckily, because of the Internet, a variety of cooking shows and social media posts, authentic Asian foods are slowly gaining notoriety for its uniformity and abundance of spices. Breaking the stronghold that many of us may have about ordering mostly Americanized dishes like General Tso Chicken or department store Pad Thai. Following three different local Asian restaurants- PJ Thai, E-Tang, and L&L Barbecue. I gained insight on cooking that stems from family history and a love for recreating meals that defines comfort, love, and most importantly consistency.
